On attention · Essay 07

A little room
to think.

What happens when we leave a little more space for the things that matter?

A room changes when you move a chair. Nothing new has been added, yet the way through it becomes clearer. There is a place to pause, a path to follow, and enough space to notice what was already there.

A page works in much the same way. Its words need room to breathe, but space alone is not enough. The distance between lines, the shape of a paragraph, and the quiet presence of a heading all help a reader find their way.

Space is a relationship.

A heading belongs to the thought beneath it. A toolbar belongs to the task around it. Give both the same limits and one of them will suffer. The point is not to make everything larger or smaller. It is to give each thing the room its purpose needs.

Dense does not have to mean tiny. Weight, alignment, and grouping do much of the work here.

Every language
needs room.

Different scripts share a setting, not identical glyph metrics. Enlarge the text and watch the controls adapt.

WHAT TO NOTICE

The prose has its own measure. The toolbar keeps the full width. A reading rule stays inside its reading region.

Computed typography inventory — roles

Font sizes, weights, and leading come from getComputedStyle. Source rules are resolved from this page's stylesheet; browser font fallback may vary by device.

01 / TASK BEFORE SCALE

Reading is different
from operating.

An essay rewards a steady rhythm. A workspace rewards quick recognition. They need different relationships, even when they share a screen.

02 / SCOPE BEFORE RULE

A good rule knows
where to stop.

Limit the prose, not the whole interface. Unify labels that do the same job. Leave headings, metadata, and controls the room their purpose needs.

03 / LOOK BEFORE DONE

Numbers describe it.
The render decides.

A clean scale can still wrap badly. Inspect real words at real widths, compare the surroundings, then make the next change.
